The latest Sensis Social Media report was released in June and the findings were very interesting. Unfortunately, the figures for the take-up of social media in small businesses are still quite small which just seems crazy to me. Out of all the small businesses in Australia, only 48% are using social media in any form?!  Depending on what kind of industry your business is in, it would be a mistake to omit it from your marketing toolkit.

Why? Because:

1. You can use social media to help build awareness of your brand
2. You can use it to create a relationship with your followers
3. Your competitors are most probably already using social media so you’re already behind
4. Advertising on social media is still a lot cheaper than the traditional advertising methods
5. You can connect with customers you may not have ordinarily connected with

All these reasons and more, are why your small business needs to be on social media.

Out of the current small businesses using social media, only 20% are paying for advertising compared to 27% of medium businesses and 61% of large businesses.  You may argue that medium and large businesses may have a larger budget to work with, but honestly, you don’t need to be running a multi-million dollar advertising campaign. For your small business, you could get away with boosting some posts or running some local awareness campaigns.

With the introduction of Instagram, you can now pay to advertise on both Facebook and Instagram. It is well worth adding into your marketing plan some budget for advertising on social media.
