Mark Twain once famously said “I could live two months on a good compliment”. I tend to agree. In fact, I’m still dining out on a compliment paid to me over a year ago.
I had caught up with a friend for a coffee and told her how I go camping with a group of Mums and kids (without our partners). I tow a trailer with all our stuff as well as a bike rack and the kids have a ball. My friend said to me “you are so capable”. That was it. Four words that made me feel so wonderful and happy, that I still remember them today.
The power of the compliment doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the size of the compliment. Paying somebody a compliment demonstrates to them that you see them and appreciate them. Receiving a compliment can help raise their feeling of self worth and motivate them to utilise their skills to the best of their ability.
The one and only rule for paying a compliment is it must be honest and sincere. If it’s insincere it’s considered flattery. The main difference between a compliment and flattery is motive.
So I challenge you to pay someone a sincere compliment. Help make someone’s day even better and remember, it doesn’t need to be a big compliment. It just needs to be genuine. Until next time, stay engaged, be present and have fun.
