Too often I will come across a small business owner who is obsessed with the number of followers they have. No matter what the number is – they want more. They aim for a figure that’s three times what they have. Which is fine. If you know what you want them for. But when I ask them why they want more, they don’t really have an answer. They may say “for more reach”. And I ask “for what message?”
And there’s nothing. They don’t have an answer.
And do you know why? Because they don’t know what they’re trying to say. They don’t have a marketing plan, they have no strategy and they’re just looking at numbers. They have no clue what story they’re trying to tell and they’re just getting into a competition with other businesses (or some crazy self-created notion that they need more).
Well good luck to them. Because while they’re tying themselves up in knots increasing the number of their followers, other businesses who know who they are and who they’re trying to reach will be gaining meaningful, engaged and loyal customers.
Stop concentrating on the number and focus instead on your business. Who are you? What’s your offering? What is your main objective with your marketing? What’s your differentiating factor/s? Who is your ideal client? Where are they online? What are their fears, needs and wants? What are they saying about your product? How do they want to be engaged?
Make time to sit down and focus on your business. Get it clear in your mind the answer to all those questions, and then craft a strategy that will help you reach those goals.
And stop putting the numbers as your number one priority. Start focusing on your business and on the followers you DO have. Until next time, stay engaged, be present and have fun.
